test is also used by institutions in other countries where English is the language of
instruction. In addition, government agencies, scholarship programs and licensing /
certification agencies use TOEFL® scores to evaluate English proficiency. An acceptable

The purpose of the Test of English as a Foreign
Language (TOEFL®) is to evaluate the English
proficiency of people whose native language is not
English. The test was initially developed to measure
the English proficiency of international students
wishing to study at colleges and universities in the
United States and Canada, and this continues to be
its primary function. However, a number of academic
institutions in other countries, as well as certain
independent organizations, agencies, and foreign
governments, have also found the test scores useful.
The TOEFL test is recommended for students at the
eleventh-grade level or above; the test content is
considered too difficult for younger students....

Purpose of the TSE test
The primary purpose of the Test of Spoken
English (TSE®
) is to measure the ability of
nonnative speakers of English to communicate
orally in a North American English context. The
TSE test is delivered in a semidirect format,
which maintains reliability and validity while
controlling for the subjective variables associated
with direct interviewing. Because it is a test of
general oral language ability, the TSE test is
appropriate for examinees regardless of native
language, type of educational training, or field of
employment....

ures your ability to understand English as spoken in North America. If you have lived in an English-speak-

your knowledge of English grammar and usage, including topics such as verb tenses, idioms, and parallel
structure. The Reading section measures your ability to understand passages written in English. You will be

As you can see, the time constraints are brutal. To succeed, you must ration
your time properly. The reason that time is so critical is that every question
counts the same toward your final score. If you run out of time on any passage
the questions that you do not answer will hurt your score far more than earlier
questions that you spent extra time on and feel certain are correct.

task is quite unlike a university essay, since it is typical one and a half (1
& 1/2) to two (2) pages long and it written on an unprepared topic in about
half an hour. No university essay is like that. Even in university...

he majority of colleges will ask for an essay. Some schools ask for essays within the application
process, others may request this as part of their scholarship process, some ask for both.
